Duane was born in Princeton, Indiana, to Edythe and Rex Talley on November 24, 1946. He attended several schools in various towns and countries but graduated from Odessa’s Permian High School in 1965. After graduation he attended DeVry Technological Institute in Chicago, Illinois.  Then he was drafted into the US Army, did basic training in Fort Polk, Louisiana, and was relocated to Lai Khe, Vietnam, with Co. C 1/16 Inf, 1st Infantry Division, until he was seriously wounded in July of 1968. Due to 2 different service injuries in Vietnam, he was awarded a Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts.

After recuperating, he and Susan Robison married on June 12, 1970, in Odessa. They moved to Pecos, Texas, where she taught school. They also lived in Lubbock, Tx, until 1980 when they moved home to Odessa.

Duane was a lifetime member of the Vietnam Veterans of America, Disabled American Veterans, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the American Legion. He loved his military brothers. He was awarded an Honorary Life Membership of the Texas Congress of PTA in April of 1997 for voluntary work at Dowling Elementary where his children attended school. He was always ready to share his experiences from Vietnam with students, which he did on a regular basis with classes at Permian High School. He has been a member of Crescent Park Baptist Church since 1980 where he was also ordained as a deacon. He was always ready to help or encourage our church activities, especially VBS (Vacation Bible School).
