Odessa

Sheila Thurman Weaver, 70, of Odessa, TX, passed away on Tuesday, September 13, 2022, at home surrounded by family.

Memorial services will be held at 1:00 PM, Saturday, October 1, 2022, at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home in Odessa, with Jimmy Dennis officiating.

Sheila was born in Eldorado, IL, to Raymond and Myrle Thurman on September 18, 1951.  She graduated from Eldorado High School in 1969.  Sheila worked at Pearce Hospital as a Surgical Tech.

She moved to Odessa, TX in October 1980 to be near family and pursue her nursing career.  Sheila graduated from the Odessa College Nursing Program in 1982 and began her life-long career at Medical Center working as a floor nurse.  She went on to work in home healthcare for a few years before she began working at West Texas Dialysis Center working as a Dialysis nurse and eventually working her way up to Director of Nursing.  After several years, she decided she wanted to get back to more patient care.  Throughout the rest of her career, she worked at West Texas Cancer Center, Hospice House and eventually retired from ECISD as a school nurse.  Sheila loved and showed caring compassion to all her patients and their families.

Sheila was a strong, independent and caring single mother and she raised her daughter to be the same way.  She loved her daughter, her only grandchild – Breanna – the light of her life – and all her family and friends deeply.  Sheila always enjoyed hosting big family holidays and gatherings; always saying – “the more, the merrier”.

She is preceded in death by her birth father, Raymond Thurman; her parents John and Myrle Shank; grandmother, Eva Markham; grandparents, Otto and Arletta Thurman; sisters, Dianna Lynn Walker and Penny Merida.

Sheila is survived by her daughter, Kristie Graves (Monte Farris); granddaughter, Breanna Augustine; brothers, Steve Thurman (Molly), Jerry Thurman, Michael Shank (Jonetta); sisters, Becky Bledsoe, Jeanie Wilhite, Jennifer Jackson; and numerous nieces and nephews and many more extended family and friends.  She is also survived by her beloved dogs Skyler, Penny and Beaux.

Sheila’s family wishes to extend our sincerest thank you to Rhonda White, NP, the entire staff of West Texas Oncology and Home Hospice.  Your care, love and compassion were greatly appreciated.
