Ronnie Hobbs

April 28, 1960 — June 3, 2022

Odessa

Ronnie Wayne Hobbs, age 62, of Odessa, Texas, passed away Friday, June 3, 2022, in Great Bend, Kansas, as a result of injuries sustained in a racing accident. Ronnie was born April 28, 1960, in Monahans, Texas.

Ronnie graduated from Andrews High School in 1978, and began his electrical career with Cass Electric, an oilfield electrical contracting company. Ultimately Ronnie became the founding vice president of U.S. operations of Pyramid Instrumentation & Electric Corporation. In 2009, Ronnie founded Lone Star Corporation and grew it from a small West Texas startup to a regional leader providing electrical services to a wide variety of industrial sectors. One of Ronnie’s proudest accomplishments was building Lone Star with the help of his family and closest friends and employees who have become the Lone Star family.

From a young age, Ronnie loved all things fast. After raising his family, Ronnie competed at No Prep and Pro Mod events, first in a Chevy Corvette, then in a Chevrolet S-10 known as the Texas Rattlesnake, and finally in a 2017 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 known as the Texas Rattlesnake 3.0. After early success, he found himself at home in the Mid-West Drag Racing Series. Ronnie’s crew, which always included his wife, Mara, and Landon, recently won the MWDRS Pro Mod event in Tulsa. They made invaluable friendships within the drag racing community and Ronnie will be forever remembered in the sport as a humble but fierce competitor who was never without his signature smile.

Above all else, Ronnie loved being a father to Landon and Kayla and a stepfather to Nick, Cooper and Molly Barham, but he especially loved being Big Poppa to his grandchildren, Brooke and Wells. Baby Hobbs coming in December had already given him much delight. Ronnie spent most Friday afternoons playing golf with Mara and friends and enjoyed weekends in Dallas and Austin cheering on the Cowboys and Longhorns. Ronnie never met a stranger, loved without condition and lived his life to the fullest. He will be forever missed.

Ronnie is survived by his wife, Mara; son, Landon and daughter-in-law Kayla; stepsons, Nick Barham and Cooper Barham and wife Lauren and their children Brooke and Wells; and stepdaughter Molly Barham. He is also survived by the mother of his son, Karen Hobbs; brothers, Darrell Hobbs and Kerry Hobbs; his mother, Jackie Chastain; his mother-in-law, Tommye Ann Montgomery and her husband Monty; and his beloved Lone Star family and his best friend, Harley.
