Londa Medlin

April 5, 1938 — January 16, 2023

Odessa

Late Monday evening, January 16, 2023, Londa Jean Medlin was able to break the bonds of earth and finally hug her loving husband and son again. We will certainly miss her, yet we rejoice in her release from pain. The mental image of her reunion with James has helped us begin this new journey without her.

Londa Jean Medlin was born, April 5, 1938, in Roby, Texas to Luther and Alene Donham.  She attended Roby High School where she was part of the Yearbook staff and a cheerleader. During her senior year while riding around downtown Rotan, Texas with a group of girlfriends, she met this tall, dark and really handsome guy from Bay Springs, Mississippi.  Within a few months, James Medlin had proposed, of course Londa accepted, and they married soon after Londa graduated. Their two children, Jeanie and David completed their family.  James and Londa lacked 3 days being married 57 years when James passed away.

James and Londa were active members of Sherwood Church of Christ in Odessa, Texas for over 5 decades.  Almost immediately after placing their membership at Sherwood, Londa found a life-long friend.  Londa and her chosen sister, Jeannette Hamil traveled with the youth group on many of their trips and cooked most of the meals for everyone on the trip. For several years the two friends would visit a local nursing home and paint the little ladies’ fingernails.  When Londa’s grandson was born 10 weeks premature and required several plasma transfusions, the two began donating plasma on a regular basis. They were teased quite frequently by their kids about their “blood shirts” they accumulated. Later on, they became “Pink Ladies” with the Ladies Auxiliary at Odessa Medical Hospital.

Londa was a textbook example of a homemaker. She was an excellent cook and nearly always served    breakfast, lunch and dinner on a daily basis. She was an accomplished seamstress, making clothes for her family for many years. Her most memorable creation was when she joined with her mother, Alene, to make Jeanie’s wedding dress. Even still, that beautiful dress is certainly still one of Jeanie’s most cherished possessions.

When Londa left this earth Monday night, there was lots of rejoicing by her husband, James; her son, David; her parents, Luther and Alene Donham; and her nephew, Tim Gimpel.

Those left to begin a difficult journey without her are her daughter, Jeanie Rex with husband Dan of Gardendale, Texas; brother, Leon Donham with wife Martha of Sweetwater, Texas; sister, LaVon Gimpel of Somerset, Kentucky; precious grandsons, Jonathan Medlin and Michael Rex; her chosen sister, Jeannette Hamil as well as several nieces and of course, Jeannette’s children and their families.

A memorial service will be held 10:00 AM, Friday, January 20, 2023, in the chapel at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home with Lonnie Hamil officiating.  At a later date, the ashes of James, Londa and David will be combined and then interred at Luther and Alene Donham’s gravesite in Roby, Texas, in a private family service.

The family would like to express our greatest appreciation and love for the angels in the 400 unit of Focused Care of Fort Stockton.  Your love and attentive care of Londa and us was above any expected.
