Charles Sweatt

Dr. Charles Sweatt, 81, of Odessa, TX, peacefully passed away at home on November 17, 2021, surrounded by loved ones, following a battle with dementia, and suffering a stroke.

The family will receive friends for visitation and viewing on Monday, November 29, 2021, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home, 6801 E. Business 20, Odessa, TX 79762.

The Celebration of Life Memorial will be held on Tuesday, November 30, 2021, at 1:00 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home Chapel, 6801 E. Business 20, Odessa, TX 79762 with Reverend Dr. Jimmy Braswell officiating.

Charles was born on February 3, 1940, to Earl and Maudie Sweatt in the farm community of Sunray, TX. After Charles graduated from Sunray High in 1958, he pursued a degree in Education at West Texas State University (now West Texas State A&M). While in school, Charles was a member of the ROTC and graduated with officer standing.

After graduation, Charles joined the United States Army where he served state side as an artillery instructor out of Fort Sill in Lawton, OK. After serving his country, Charles moved his family to Odessa, TX where he worked at Odessa College in the mathematics department. He was passionate about teaching and loved what he did for a living. Charles served at Dean of Mathematics and helped bring remote campus learning to surrounding West Texas communities.  He earned his Doctorate of Education while teaching at Odessa College.

In 1963, he was married to Linda Kay Howard whom he met while at high school in Sunray, TX. They had a loving Christian marriage for 58 years. Charles and Linda went on to have three children, Charles Jr., Susan, and Greg.

Charles retired in 2011 after 40 years at Odessa College. While retired, Charles had time to continue his interest in farm management, to pursue his hobby with Boy Scouts of America where he volunteered his time and to travel with his wife and family.  Also, he found great joy in spending time with his grandkids and great grandkids.

Charles is survived by wife, Linda Sweatt of Odessa, TX, son Charles (Chuck) Sweatt Jr. (Michael McGary) of Plano, TX, daughter Susan Sweatt of Odessa, TX, son Greg Sweatt (Kathy Gammon) of Richmond, TX;  sister Mary Degan of Germantown, TN, brother Mike McRee of Florida;  Grandchildren: Brandon Sweatt of Odessa, TX, Blaine Sweatt (Brittany) of Richmond, TX, Austin Sweatt of Porter, TX, Jacquelyn Gammon of Arlington, TX, Justin Gammon of College Station, TX; Great-Grandchildren: Paige Sweatt, Paisley Sweatt, and Parker Sweatt of Andrews, TX.  Charles was predeceased by father, Earl Samuel Sweatt, mother, Maudie Lee McRee, and stepfather, Victor McRee.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Brandon Sweatt, Blaine Sweatt, Austin Sweatt, and Justin Gammon.
