William VanPelt

William Paul "Chop" Van Pelt, 93, passed away peacefully in his sleep on November 21, 2025, in Las Cruces, New Mexico.

Born in Big Spring, Texas, in 1932, Chop graduated from Big Spring High School before attending Austin College, where he was a football standout. After earning his degree in 1954, he married his college sweetheart and the love of his life, Mary Frances Evans.

Following his service in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Philippine Sea, Chop began a long and dedicated coaching career. In the 1960s, he coached high school football in Big Spring, McAllen, and Odessa. He earned his master's degree from the University of Oklahoma in 1966. He later moved into the collegiate ranks, coaching at West Texas State beginning in 1971. His career also took him to UTEP, Lamar University, Weslaco High School, McMurry University, Ranger Jr College, and the University of North Texas. After retiring from coaching in 1990, Chop began a second career with FEMA, where he served until 2004.

Chop was active in his church and devoted to his family. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather-and he remained deeply admired by many of the players he mentored over the years.

He was preceded in death by his cherished wife, Mary Frances. He is survived by his son Chip and his wife Mary; grandsons Jon and Alex; great-grandchildren Lily, William, Sullivan, and Mae; and by his son Eric and his wife Cindy, along with grandchildren Erin, Evan, his wife Mac, and Cameron.

Private services will be held.
