Sherrie Martin Thomas, 81, of Odessa, passed away on Monday February 23rd, 2026.
Visitation will be from 5pm-8pm on Thursday March 5th at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.
Funeral Services will be held at 10am on March 6th at First Baptist Church Odessa with Pastor Byron McWilliams officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Sherrie was born on August 7, 1944, in Odessa, Texas. She went to school at Ector High School in Odessa. From an early age, she carried a gentle spirit and a strong desire to build a loving family of her own. As a teenager, she met the love of her life, Jay L. Thomas, at Sherwood Park Pool when they were just 14 years old and were married at 18 years old. She loved being a mother and a homemaker. Sherrie also found purpose beyond her home. She began volunteering at Goliad Elementary School and quickly discovered how much she loved working with children. That love led her to become a special education teacher, a position she faithfully held for several years until her retirement. Caring for children who needed extra patience and attention suited her tender heart, and she gave herself fully to the students entrusted to her. Over the last several years, Sherrie found joy and fellowship attending First Baptist Church in Odessa. She cherished the friendships she made in her Senior Adults Sunday school class and looked forward to it every week, always making sure to “get her hair done up” for the occasion.
Sherrie was preceded in death by her husband, Jay L. Thomas; her daughter, Jaylene Rene Thomas; her mother, Dorothy Jackson; and her father, Charles Jackson. She is survived by her sister, Melody Kay Williams; her son, Kenny Thomas, and his wife, Kelly; her grandchildren, Emma Jay Thomas and Jack Dillon Thomas; her niece, Michelle Richardson, and her husband, Clint; and her nephew, Kelby Hough, and his wife, Hannah.
The family of Sherrie wishes to extend our sincere thanks to Gentiva Hospice, Bobbie, Ashley, Becky, Meridith, Victoria, and Dr. Vadyala.
