Leo Richard "Dick" Payne

Leo R. Payne of Odessa passed away at home with his family by his side on Monday, March 9, 2026, in Odessa, Texas.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Thursday, March 19, 2026, at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home. A Memorial Service will take place at 10:00 AM on Friday, March 20, 2026, at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home with Reverend Dr. Jimmy Braswell officiating.

Born in Lakin, Kansas on November 13, 1947, to Leo and Betty Payne, Leo grew up in Odessa and graduated from Permian High School in 1966. He married Linda Moody, and together they had two children, Michele and David Payne. Leo continued his education and earned an associate in applied science from Odessa College on May 30, 1969. He proudly served his country in the Army, stationed in Germany during the Vietnam War.

After returning home, Leo worked as a machinist in the family business. On June 16, 1983, he married Kiona Payne, and they shared 42 beautiful years together. Leo enjoyed hunting, fishing, and snow skiing, and cherished his time living in Pagosa Springs, Colorado, where he built a beautiful home for himself and Kiona.

Leo was preceded in death by his parents, Leo and Betty Payne, his brother Gary Payne, and his granddaughter Shealyn Madsen. He is survived by his beloved wife, Kiona Payne; daughter Michele Payne; son David Payne and his wife Julie; stepson Bret Pratt; stepdaughter Elizabeth Pratt; grandchildren Dustin, Tanner, Kase, Brandon, Lydia; and two great-grandchildren, John Bryson and Marleigh.

Leo will be remembered for his loving spirit, dedication to his family, and his passion for the outdoors. His legacy of kindness and hard work lives on in those who knew and loved him.
