It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Joe Rey Varela, who departed from this world on February 15, 2024. He was 38 years old. Joe Rey left behind a legacy of love, kindness, and cherished memories that will forever be treasured by those who were fortunate enough to know him.

Born on September 23rd in Pecos, Tx, Joe Rey was a beloved son, brother, father, and friend. He touched the lives of many with his gentle spirit, unwavering compassion, and his generosity.

Throughout his life, Joe Rey demonstrated resilience and strength in the face of adversity. He approached challenges with grace and determination, serving as an inspiration to all who knew him. His unwavering optimism and positive outlook on life illuminated even the darkest of days.

Joe Rey had a passion for art, music, cooking, and creativity, finding solace and joy in his pursuits. He enjoyed gaming with his son and nephews, and barbecuing with his dad and brothers. He loved restoring old bikes, and gifting them to children in need. 

Above all, Joe Rey cherished time spent with family and friends. His unwavering love and devotion knew no bounds, and his presence brought warmth and light to every gathering. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Joe Rey leaves behind his parents: Oscar and Lori Varela, brothers Jaime Varela, Mark Varela and wife Jolynn. Daughter Aubrie Varela, and Son Dreyden Varela. Nephews Ean, Ryen and Roman Varela, numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, and four legged friend, Sir Loin.

He is preceded in death by his fraternal grandparents: Joe and Maria Varela of Pecos, and Maternal Grandparents Lucio and Katy Lara of Odessa.


Visitation for the public will be held Monday, February 19, 2024, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, followed by a Recitation of the Rosary at 7:00 pm at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.

Mass of Christian Burial services will be on Tuesday, February 20, 2024, at 10:00 AM at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church. 

Pallbearers will be Dreyden Varela, Jaime Varela, Ean Varela, Mark Varela, Jake Varela, Joey Varela, Elijah Alvarado, and Jesse Gonzales. 

Though Joe Rey may no longer walk beside us, his spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. May he rest in eternal peace, knowing his love will continue to guide and inspire us always. Joe Rey's family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to all those who have offered their love, support, and condolences during this difficult time. Your kindness and compassion have provided strength during our time of grief.
