José Angel Campos Sr., of Odessa, Texas, passed away on May 12th, 2026.
The viewing will be Sunday, May 17th at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home from 5 pm – 8 pm, with the Rosary beginning at 6 pm.

José was born in Marfa, Texas, to Francisco and Leonarda Campos on February 2nd, 1954. He was the youngest of 12 siblings and grew up understanding what it meant to value family and contribute to the needs of those around him. He began his education at Travis Elementary in Odessa, Texas, and completed his schooling in 1972 from Ector High School, where he became an advocate for social and racial justice registering Southside Odessans to vote and organizing walkouts in protest of the unequal treatment of minorities.
In 1978, he married the love of his life, Elena Moncada, and began a family, welcoming daughter Maria Elena in 1979 and son José Angel Jr. in 1983. On March 15th, 1987, he made a courageous commitment to sobriety, a decision that transformed his life and deepened his dedication to his family and his future.
Inspired by his own journey, José dedicated the rest of his life to helping others. He worked for Gregory Rig Service as a painter before enrolling in college and earning his degree in Psychology from The University of Texas Permian Basin. He went on to serve as a Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor for Ector County Probation and founded Decisiones Counseling, a practice dedicated to serving the Spanish-speaking community. José lived what he counseled; that recovery, family, and community are always worth fighting for.
José is preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Maria Elena Campos Rimer.
José is survived by his wife Elena Campos; his son Joe Campos Jr. and daughter-in-law Kimberly Campos; his older sister Josie Ramos; his son-in-law Kevin Rimer and daughter-in-law Brittany Rimer; and his grandsons John and Harrison Rimer.
Pallbearers will be Eric Garcia, Eddie Guerrero Jr., Joshua Jumper, Ray Mata, John David Olivas, and Kevin Rimer
The family wishes to extend a sincere thanks to the CCU staff at Medical Center Hospital for their devoted care in his final days, Odessa EMS for giving him a second chance, and Dr. Stephanie Kubacek, Dr. Lee, Dr. Raja Naidu, Dr. Joy Okuwa, and Dr. Hillary Brunner for helping him fight for as long as he did.
