James "Jim" Henry Gilliland III

James Henry Gilliland III of Odessa, Tx was called home by The Father on June 12, 2025. There will be a service in his honor on June 18th at 2pm at Sunset Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home Chapel.

Jim was born in Tulsa, OK to James and LaRue Gilliland on February 15, 1941. He was a graduate of Odessa High School and Odessa Jr College. He worked in the Insurance business for 62 years having started with corporations and finally opening his own agency, Gilliland Insurance Agency, which thrived in the bustling West Texas Oil fields.

He was an active member of the Odessa community serving on the World-Famous Odessa Chuck Wagon Gang for many years. He also served on the Odessa Jr College Board of Trustees for many years. His BIG I Golf tournament is legendary and his contribution to young adults seeking their diplomas from OC continues to this day.

Jim was also a long-time member of the Odessa Jaycees, serving as a President, and Senator among several other offices. He was also a very active member of the First Christian Church. He will be greatly missed by all.

He was preceded in death by his parents Jim and Larue, his brother Larry, and his grandson David Burns. 

He is survived by his wife Linda. They have been together for 66 years and married for almost 63. He is also survived by his 2 siblings Bobby Gilliland and Ann Wadley. As well as his 4 children and their spouses, James IV (Angela), Julia (Tony), Jean Ann, and Jennifer (Doug). Along with his 6 grandchildren, his 5 great grandchildren, nieces, and nephew.

In lieu of flowers and memorials, we suggest a donation to Jim’s favorite charity the Permian Basin Rehabilitation Center. The family would like to extend their sincere thanks to the care givers, friends and all those who knew Jim and for your thoughts and prayers.
