Doris Harrison

December 1, 1930 — April 17, 2019

On April 17, 2019 Doris Harrison followed The Light and reunited with her beloved soul mate Thomas Harrison Jr who preceded her in death. Doris was born 12-1-1930 to Leon and Zella Mathis in Abilene, TX.

Leon and Zella had three daughters and Doris was a wonderful big sister. Doris attended Abilene High School, where she was a member of the National Honor Society. Doris loved music which was expressed by being a member of the trio and choir.

As a Senior, she met and started dating the handsome young man Thomas Harrison who was attending McMurray College at the time. She graduated in 1948 and then attended Draughn's Business College. Doris and Thomas married on 12-22-1949. Thomas graduated from college and they moved to Dimmitt, TX where Thomas grew up and his parents still lived. Doris was very close to Thomas Sr. and Marjorie Harrison for the rest of their lives.

Doris and Thomas had two children, Thomas Lynn and Pamela Sue. She was a devoted mother.

The young family moved to Odessa in 1958. Highland Methodist Church became their church home. Doris often sang in the choir and loved her women's Dorcas Circle group.

Doris worked in the office at Ireland Elementary for 12 years. She and Thomas then opened Mary Moppet's Day Care in 1971 where Doris was the beloved Director until 1985. Doris loved children and made a positive difference in many children's lives. Years after the close of the day care, she was still remembered and loved.

In 1984, Doris's dream came true when her son Tommy and his wife Cindy had Doris's first grandchild Michelle and then their second child Shannon in 1986. In December 1989, daughter Pamela had Malea and Tommy and Cindy had twins Ryan and Lauren. Doris loved her grandchildren deeply calling them "my Pride and Joy."

In 2000, Thomas passed away. Although her heart was broken and she missed him terribly, Doris continued with her life. She again cared for friends' children for several years until she retired. Then she was blessed with "my precious" great grandchildren Avalee, Alivia, and Jack. Doris loved these children with her whole being. They gave her life purpose for the rest of her life.

Doris is survived by her two children, five grandchildren, three great grandchildren and two sisters, Darlene Hunsiker, Round Rock Texas and Brenda Carr, San Angelo, Texas. Also she is survived by her sister-in-law of many years, Cherry Harrison and several nieces and a nephew.

There will be a Memorial Service for Doris Harrison on Saturday, 4-27-19 at 10:00 AM, at Highland Methodist Church. Doris was a Type 1 Diabetic for 65 years. Family requests donations be given to the National Diabetes Association in lieu of flowers.
