Betty York

September 11, 1934 — October 8, 2022

Ruidoso

Betty Jewel “Slaughter” York was born in San Saba, Texas on September 11, 1934. Betty graduated from San Saba High School, where she had met and married the love of her life, Robert Doran York on June 9, 1951.

Betty was an example of a life well lived. Betty and Robert celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on June 9, 2001. One of Betty’s favorite past times was cooking meals for family and friends and enjoying spending time with all. She never met a stranger and treated everyone as family. She cherished her Husband, children, siblings, nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren above all things. She was actively involved in the community with service to the MCH Hospital Auxiliary where her favorite past time was making popcorn and bringing joy to everyone she met. Betty was involved for many years with the Permian Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association (ABWA) and served as Woman of the Year in 1982. In addition to this, she was also a member of the Odessa Forum and loved serving her community. One of Betty’s many nicknames was “Betty GoGo” which was fitting as she was always on the go and was the driver on many vacation trips throughout the United States with her husband, sister and brother-in-law.

Betty was a member of Temple Baptist Church and later First Baptist Church for many years while living in Odessa. She retired as a bookkeeper from EMCO Machine Works.

Betty is preceded in death by her parents, Ralph Bert Slaughter and Altha Bessent Slaughter, her brothers, Ralph Bert Slaughter Jr., Jerry Lloyd Slaughter, Gary Nelson Slaughter and son-in-law Richard J. Albers.

She is survived by her sister, Wanda Burns and her husband Bill Burns of Brady, Texas; brothers, Larry D. Slaughter and wife Judy Slaughter of Andrews, TX, and Stephen D. Slaughter and wife Susan Slaughter of Belton, TX; daughter, Rhonda Kay Albers of Ruidoso, NM; Robert D. York Jr and wife Beth York of Kingwood; Jana Denise Wortham and husband Mike Wortham of Forney, TX; grandchildren, Justin C. York and wife Alison York of Odessa, Dustin M. York of Odessa, Teresa Couch and husband Brian Couch of Odessa; five great-grandchildren, Jackson York, Abby York, Chloe York, Madeleine Couch and Kamie Couch, and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
